Blog Entry #1
Obama's speech is about the connection of faith and government. Obama wants to bring every religion together, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc. On June 28, 2006, then-Senator Barack Obama of Illinois addressed a group of religious people in which he focused on the dysfunctional relationship between religion and politics. Obama began by describing a personal experience when he ran against Alan Keyes for Illinois' Senate seat in 2004. In his anecdote, Obama explains how Keyes describes him as an untrue Christian due to his religious beliefs. As a result, Obama believes this conflict has created a strong divide in the country. Senator Obama goes on to say that even though Americans are religious we are missing something that cannot be fulfilled easily, something like a purpose in life. Towards the end of his speech, Obama touches upon the Bible,MartinLutherKing's "I Have a Dream" speech and Lincoln's Second InauguralAddress. Obama gives a speech on the topic of religion in government. Barrack Obama closing statement is, "A hope that we can live with one another in a way that reconciles the beliefs of each with the good of all. It's a prayerworth praying, and a conversation worth having in this country in the monthsand years to come. Thank you." He clearly made his point with religion notinterfering with politics, while also showing his audience that he is like them andthat he wants what is best for the country just like they do.
